Digitalization as a challenge and a chance

Smart meter technologies provide energy utilities with new means for optimized consumption transparency and a deepened customer dialogue

Cologne, 04.10.2017 – Digitalization has an impact on all aspects of life. The analogous measurement technologies are gradually abolished and replaced by smart meter-technologies. This changeover is a major challenge for all energy utilities, but it also offers new opportunities. Smart meter specialist GreenPocket provides utilities with innovative means to give their customers a transparent view on their energy consumption and to improve their customer dialogue.

The digitalization of the energy industry and the interrelated smart meter-rollout are occasionally viewed as a legally enforced burden by energy utilities. It is less well-known that the changeover to smart energy also provides high potential for improvement: Analogous measurement technologies are solely able to measure the energy consumption of a residential or a business-customer on an annual basis, whereas smart meters generate one data point every 15 minutes. This leads to over 35.000 data points in a year, resulting in a far more precise customer knowledge.

GreenPocket: flexible and demand-orientated
Smart meter-specialist GreenPocket is a reliable partner for energy utility companies, aiming to support their sales activities with optimized data transparency and energy efficiency. By processing individual data sets, its intelligent energy management software is able to give a clear view on the end-users energy consumption. Furthermore, alerting- and reporting-functions can be offered to business-customers. This way, they are able to highlight patterns of their energy consumption and to optimize the energy efficiency for their customers, developing a constant dialogue and a long lasting customer relationship.
One of the tool’s most important features is its flexibility. GreenPocket provides the appropriate software packages for every customer need. Based on the customers‘ feedback, the software is continuously developed further, reflecting the constant changes on the energy market.

Upselling tool and improved data quality management for business customers
With the latest update of the GreenPocket energy management tool for business customers, two significant software features were integrated. Using the new upselling tool, energy utilities can now decide which software bundles and conditions will be offered to each individual customer. This enables an easy differentiation between an economic basic package on the one hand and a more extensive premium package with optional features like alarm and notification functionalities on the other hand. These packages can then be bundled into different pricing models by the energy utilities.
Another improvement of the web portal for business customers comprises an enhanced data quality control. With the help of bar and line charts, energy providers can now easily detect if and when gaps arise in their automatic data import. This allows an optimized monitoring of data quality.

Campaigning tool and gamification for the residential customer portal
The web portal for residential customers has also been substantially updated with two valuable functions for energy utility companies. The campaigning tool now enables a precise modulation of marketing instruments based on individual customer behaviour, such as promotions via push notifications and email-alerts (e.g. giving hints on „happy hours“ when energy prices are low). It is now possible to individually select and address customer profiles with certain consumption patterns and offer fitting tariffs and bundles to each customer.
In addition to this, the new gamification app encourages consumers to lay daily bets on the height of their energy consumption, increasing the software’s usage frequency and customer involvement: In a test run of 3 months, about half of the customers made use of the gamification app, 25% of them even played on a daily basis. This way, energy utilities can significantly increase customer awareness and retention.

Optimizing Maritime Safety and Efficiency

Optimizing Maritime Safety and Efficiency

Owing to the rapid increase in global shipping traffic during recent years, there is growing need for constant innovation in the field of maritime surveillance.

Shipping companies deploy modern technologies to ensure enhanced monitoring, efficiency and security of their fleet. Vessel location and navigation systems have become a primary focus.

Earth Observation contributes to maritime surveillance to help manage the actions and events that can have an impact on maritime safety and security, including for marine pollution, accident and disaster response, search and rescue as well as maritime border and fisheries control.

Space-Based Automated Route Planning

„As far as voyage planning is concerned, we are already working on optimizing the automated route calculation based on the influence of integrated Earth observation data“, says Friedhelm Moggert-Kägeler, Head of Product Management at SevenCs GmbH.

SevenCs develops S-57 chart display Kernels for ECDIS, WECDIS and other maritime applications, ENC production and distribution software, and professional maritime navigation software. SevenCs is also project partner of MARSAT, a corporate network of private companies and a research institute that develops new services for the maritime industry using satellite data.

MARSAT project partners include EOMAP GmbH & Co. KG, Drift & Noise Polar Services GmbH, European Space Imaging GmbH, SevenCs GmbH, Trenz AG and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL). They combine extensive experience and expertise in the field of satellite services, software development and maritime services.

„MARSAT is an ambitious project which brings together competence of specialists in satellite data provision and analysis, IT and the maritime industry. This team will lay the ground for improved decision making for shipping route optimization, offshore planning and maintenance as well as emergency events“, said Dr. Knut Hartmann, Project Coordinator MARSAT, EOMAP GmbH & Co KG.

The network that started work in August 2016 creates and integrates operational services to allow the maritime industry to take advantage of the most up-to date satellite information in their daily work.

„For SevenCs, the first MARSAT year offered the opportunity to embark upon completely new activities, e.g. Satellite Derived Bathymetry, as well as working on new innovative solutions for traditional subjects of maritime navigation such as voyage planning. We succeeded in creating new navigational charts for areas with insufficient chart coverage thus enabling skin divers and skippers to securely head for areas of interest“, explains Friedhelm Moggert-Kägeler.

Stern Energy opts for monitoring from meteocontrol

(Source: @Stern Energy)

Augsburg/Parma, 07/11/2017 – Stern Energy S.p.a has reached a decision: The Italian O&M operator of photovoltaic systems will further rely on the monitoring platform of Germany-based meteocontrol GmbH to run operations on its portfolio. 25 MWp of the overall 195 MWp installed power that Stern Energy monitors and operates in Italy are already integrated in VCOM (virtual control room) and therefore can be monitored and controlled by means of the central platform. Stern Energy receives direct, on-site support in the Italian language by meteocontrol Italia S.r.l.

„We want to provide our customers with optimal systems performance and maximum returns, while working effectively and cost-efficiently,“ explains Stefan Torri, CEO of Stern Energy. „That is why we decided to place all the solar parks onto one monitoring platform. The first 25 MWp have already been integrated in the VCOM central monitoring portal and another almost 30 MWp are currently in the project pipeline.“

With the modular structure of its monitoring solution, meteocontrol offers the best conditions for the implementation thereof. The scalability of the system allows the hardware and software to be adjusted to meet complex park layouts, constantly growing technical requirements and currently applicable standards. „We can also integrate existing systems in the VCOM with a wide range of software solutions and hardware components,“ explains Martin Schneider, the Managing Director of meteocontrol. „If it“s necessary to retrofit with hardware, as is partially the case with Stern Energy, the costs are relatively low in comparison to complex operation management with different systems and portal environments.“ In addition, bundling all systems onto one monitoring platform creates transparency and comparability, thus enabling the early detection of any hidden errors as well as a prompt response in the event of a disruption.

„We“re looking forward to having a long-term partnership with meteocontrol. The products and solutions are high-quality and represent state-of-the-art technology. The support and services from meteocontrol provide optimal assistance during implementation. In addition to the ongoing retrofit of the current 13 MWp, we are in the final negotiations with our customers regarding the modification of another 15 MWp,“ reports Stefan Torri of Stern Energy.

meteocontrol to perform monitoring and feed-in management for Arkolia Energies in France

German-French partnership between meteocontrol and Arkolia Energies

meteocontrol to perform monitoring and feed-in management for Arkolia Energies in France

(Source: Arkolia Energies)

Augsburg, July 06, 2017 – meteocontrol GmbH has become a partner of Arkolia Energies in Montpellier, France. The aim of the partnership is to equip all of the solar parks operated by the solar-energy company with a uniform monitoring system and to facilitate electricity feed-in. meteocontrol will integrate the existing PV systems into the manufacture-independent monitoring platform VCOM. For its new systems, Arkolia Energies plans to use the complete monitoring solution offered by meteocontrol, including hardware components. meteocontrol also developed the necessary interface with Enedis, a French grid operator, for this purpose.

Arkolia Energies has a solar portfolio of about 150 MWp of installed power. More than 400 MWp is currently in the development phase as well. To ensure that the solar systems can be efficiently and securely monitored, the company decided to work with meteocontrol. The flexibility of the monitoring system is what sold Arkolia Energies on meteocontrol: The existing systems equipped with a broad range of different monitoring systems can be imported into the VCOM monitoring portal without any hardware changes. Arkolia Energies can now monitor and manage all systems in VCOM.

„We entered a partnership with meteocontrol for one main reason: Its monitoring solution is a system with open interfaces that can be modified to meet our needs,“ said Guillaume Bringard, the O&M Manager at Arkolia Energies. In 2015, the French grid operator Enedis imposed requirements regarding the management of feed-in active power (P0) and reactive power (Q0) on energy producers. meteocontrol developed the interface that enables Arkolia Energies to meet these needs.

VCOM – all systems at a glance
meteocontrol has designed the central monitoring platform VCOM with flexibility in mind. As a result, the measurement data of components made by the widest range of manufacturers can be integrated and processed for analysis and visualization. „This is a cost-efficient solution for system operators, one that also generates real savings in operation management,“ said Martin Schneider, the Managing Director of meteocontrol. „The management of large system portfolios in particular becomes much more effective, error analysis easier and response time to system failures faster.“ meteocontrol also adapts software applications to the individual system and is developing additional remote-monitoring features for Arkolia Energies.

meteocontrol also offers a special monitoring and control solution that is designed to meet French market requirements regarding dynamic reactive power (DEIE). This solution will be used in future projects with Arkolia. „We are really excited about this partnership,“ Martin Schneider said. „Together with Arkolia Energies, interesting projects and new challenges will arise, and they will significantly increase our presence in the French market.“

meteocontrol, EU headquarter based in Augsburg, Germany and APMEA headquarter based in Shanghai (China), with offices and branches in Chicago (U.S.A.), Lyon (France), Madrid (Spain) and Milan (Italy) offers energy and weather data management, yield reports, quality audits and technical due diligence as well as monitoring of PV systems of all sizes. meteocontrol has more than 40 years of expertise in renewable energy systems and has so far been involved in projects with a total investment volume of more than 13 billion Euros. Rotor Impact Mill turns previously unusable automotive shredder residue into a valuable resource

Recovering metals from fine shredder fractions: Non-ferrous metal fractions become usable thanks to enhanced processing.

Rotor Impact Mill turns previously unusable automotive shredder residue into a valuable resource

The BHS Rotor Impact Mill of type RPMV is shown in the center

Kajaanin Romu Oy operates one of Finland“s most advanced plants for recycling scrap in the town of Kajaani, located approximately 500 km northeast of Helsinki. The company recently commissioned a BHS-Sonthofen plant for processing automotive shredder residue (ASR) fine fractions of particle sizes between 0 and 30 mm. It separates the feed material abundant with valuable metals into „light“ and „heavy“ fractions in a single pass. This allows the plant operators to economically produce fractions that can be sold profitably. Moreover, the plant significantly reduces the cost of material disposal at landfills.

Experience with operating shredders in the context of recycling has proven time and again that heavy non-ferrous fractions of material left over after shredding and processing large automotive, electrical or electronic scrap components still hold value. A metric ton can contain up to 20 grams of gold and up to 300 grams of silver, as well as platinum and other precious and non-ferrous metals.

Operators report that they are able to earn about EUR 3,000 per metric ton just from selling the heavy fraction of non-ferrous metals. BHS has taken improved fine fraction processing even further by integrating secondary cleaning of metals into the processing stage. This allows Finnish operator Kajaanin Romu Oy to unlock the value of reusable materials present in the ASR fine fraction. The system delivers a throughput of around 10 metric tons per hour.

At the end of the process, even the non-ferrous metal fractions are cleanly separated in silos. This includes heavy ones such as copper, gold and silver as well as light fractions such as aluminum. Presently, the proportion of salable non-ferrous metals amounts to about five to seven percent of the processed volume.

BHS-Sonthofen ASR systems do not only process fine fractions from automotive shredders. They are also suitable for processing waste incineration plant slag and electronics scrap. This means that recycling companies can adapt their product portfolio to meet increasing requirements: The higher the proportion of electronic components and platinum in vehicles and electronic devices, the greater the volume of valuable substances that can be extracted for reuse.

The technology in detail

The plant installed at Kajaanin Romu is fed fine fractions with a particle size of under 30 mm from the automotive shredder. In other words, it processes fractions that could not be used prior to introducing this system. The Rotor Impact Mill of type RPMV 1513 – a system uniquely offered by BHS-Sonthofen – crushes the material and separates it. In doing so, it works selectively, finely crushing brittle materials such as mineral substances, glass and castings and separating composites. Elastic materials such as rubber, on the other hand, remain intact.

The metals can be reclaimed since the Rotor Impact Mill shapes the pliable metals into balls. This is necessary in order for non-ferrous metals to be cleanly separated from other materials in the downstream process. The material, which is often long and flat when inserted into the mill, has to be compact and as round as possible to enable separation of the non-ferrous metal pieces.

Following this step, the material passes through a hopper into a screening machine that separates it into three fractions of 0 to 3, 3 to 6, and 6 to 12 mm. Each of these is separated into „heavy“ and „light“ through density separation. The heavy material that contains the metallic components is further separated into magnetic and non-magnetic metallic fractions using magnetic separators.

In the final processing stage, non-ferrous metals are separated into heavy (e.g., copper, gold and silver) and light (e.g., aluminum) fractions.

Moreover, the plant also generates a light fraction that primarily consists of plastic parts. This fraction is suitable for thermal utilization and does not need to be disposed of at landfills.

meteocontrol to present monitoring highlights at Intersolar 2017

SCADA and monitoring solutions at meteocontrol“s tradeshow booth B2.230

meteocontrol to present monitoring highlights at Intersolar 2017

Augsburg, 05/23/2017. New portal features in the virtual control room, a new turnkey solution for systems up to 750 kWp and SCADA for solar parks with local maintenance personnel: These are just a few of the things visitors can expect to see live at meteocontrol GmbH“s booth 230 in hall B2 under the thematic umbrella of information security.

Systematic security concept
„Information security has been our highest priority at meteocontrol since long before the „WannaCry“ cyber attacks,“ says Robert Pfatischer, Managing Director of meteocontrol. „We work continuously on bettering our security concept and are pursuing ISO 27001-certification. Even if the operator is ultimately responsible for system security, we implement the most current security standards in our hardware and software so that our customers are always secured.“ The company will present the latest updates at Intersolar. Port forwarding in conjunction with the blue“log X series has long been unnecessary. The public accessibility of the data loggers is thus systematically prevented from the outset. The encrypted connection to the VCOM enables secure, convenient remote access for maintenance and setup. The data logger itself is upgradeable at every level up to the Linux Kernel so that general vulnerabilities such as those found in TLS encryption can be rectified quickly, too. Special security against digital attacks is also a requirement in direct marketing. „We use Insys routers in our stations for encrypted VPN connection to the direct marketer so that we can stay up-to-date even with rapid technological advancements and high standards,“ explains Pfatischer.

What to see at the booth: Station for 750 kWp solutions and the SCADA system
At our booth, operators of PV systems with an installed output of up to 750 kWp can discover our fully encrypted turnkey solutions for monitoring, grid feed-in management and direct marketing. For a fixed price you will receive a system solution – including the control cabinet and the necessary components – that is customized to meet your requirements. meteocontrol manages every phase of the project, from project planning to system commissioning. The package price includes all travel costs within Germany.

In a live demo, meteocontrol will present the SCADA Center for system monitoring on site. Data is stored in a local industrial server, enabling monitoring to take place independent of a stable internet connection. The maintenance personnel can monitor and control the system in real time and rectify any faults quickly. meteocontrol recently installed the local monitoring system for a 20-MWp PV system in Japan.

meteocontrol grants longer manufacturer“s warranty
For projects with complete solutions, meteocontrol is now granting its partners a project-related manufacturer’s warranty of five years on all supplied hardware components. The warranty applies to complete solutions that comprise the planning, supply and commissioning of the system by meteocontrol. Naturally the statutory warranty period of 24 months applies even if the customer does not take advantage of the project-related manufacturer’s warranty.

VCOM: Monthly releases with new features
meteocontrol continuously refines the virtual control room and delivers new software features every month to make the portal more user-friendly, provide innovative analysis tools, and make the monitoring of large system portfolios more effective. The company has been able to successfully integrate the measurement data of different monitoring systems and platforms into the VCOM. Different PV projects can thus be bundled together ideally and monitored and controlled efficiently. The new VCOM API (Application Programming Interface) is another example of the innovative development ongoing in the software division: The interface enables data retrieval from measuring and technical system data, as well as the VCOM connection to third-party systems. meteocontrol plans to present its innovations in reporting with the next release in June.

meteocontrol and Reuniwatt form a partnership for satellite estimations and forecasts in Asia

meteocontrol and Reuniwatt form a partnership for satellite estimations and forecasts in Asia

(Source: @ Reuniwatt)

Augsburg / La Reunion, May 17, 2017. French solar forecasting pioneer Reuniwatt and German leading provider of technical consulting and monitoring solutions for PV systems meteocontrol GmbH have decided to intensify their business relationship. The partnership concerns real-time estimations and intraday forecasts for different sites in Asia.

The need for satellite data in China and Japan
Since 2014, meteocontrol has been getting a growing demand from Asian market players who are looking for monitoring and yield assessment solutions. Moreover, the Asian market is currently the largest global expanding market in the solar industry. meteocontrol has asked Reuniwatt to provide them with real-time estimations (also called „nowcasts“) and intraday forecasts for their Asian portfolio. Indeed, Reuniwatt has a known expertise in satellite data treatment, necessary to obtain such services. The French company has access to real-time raw satellite data issuing from five geostationary satellites covering all continents: Himawari-8 for Asia-Pacific, Meteosat-10 for Europe and Africa, Meteosat-8 for the Indian Ocean and the Middle East, GOES-East for North and South America, GOES-West for the Pacific islands.

Satellite data are available in near-real time: every 10 minutes for Himawari-8 and every 15 minutes for the other satellites. Reuniwatt“s operational method for providing nowcasts and intra-day solar forecasts is based on the most performing techniques to convert satellite images into solar irradiance maps.

„We are absolutely convinced that meteocontrol“s solutions are essential for all asset owners and we are very proud to accompany such a market leader on their Asian adventure“ said Reuniwatt CEO and Founder Nicolas Schmutz.

„We are happy to provide our Asian customers with the high quality forecasts from Reuniwatt to ensure grid integration of PV power in this important market“ said Robert Pfatischer, Managing Director of meteocontrol.

Intersolar 2017
Both companies will be exhibiting at Intersolar, the world“s leading show for the solar industry. The fair will take place in Munich from May 31-June 2 2017 for the 25th year.
