Augsburg/San Salvador, December 07, 2017 – meteocontrol GmbH has just laid the groundwork for further growth. The world’s leading provider of independent PV monitoring systems has signed an agreement to set up a joint venture in El Salvador. Together with the partner company ECOBLITZ S.A. de C.V., meteocontrol plans to expand its presence in Central America and Mexico and to intensify the customer support it provides there. The new company will operate under the name of meteocontrol Central America S.A. de C.V. and be based in San Salvador.

„By establishing another joint venture, we are systematically continuing to apply our expansion strategy in Latin America,“ said Martin Schneider, the Managing Director of meteocontrol. „The partnership with ECOBLITZ will give us a local presence in Mexico and Central America. We will be able to increase our market position and accelerate our growth as a result.“ The photovoltaic market has great potential that will fuel this growth. In the wake of rising demand for electricity and widely fluctuating power rates, governments in these countries have begun to support the controlled expansion of renewable energies. Projections show that PV growth in Mexico alone will reach about 17 gigawatts within the next five years. meteocontrol has now responded to this promising market outlook: „An employee of the new company will handle sales for the country of Mexico from an office in Mexico City,“ Schneider said.

The joint venture established by meteocontrol and the PV project developer ECOBLITZ combines the experience and resources of both companies. It will also market the independent monitoring solutions offered by meteocontrol. „The most critical and important aspect for us is that we are established locally and are now offering technical support,“ said Alexander Wolf, the Managing Director of meteocontrol Central America S.A. de C.V. „With our geographic and organizational set up, we are creating the base to assist customers in the entire region from Mexico to Panama including the Caribbean and meet their needs for more and more sophisticated monitoring and O&M solutions.“ In his role at the new company, Wolf will contribute the professional and international experience that he has gained while working for many years in business development at Siemens, serving as a board member of the German-Salvadoran Chamber of Industry and Commerce and by founding ECOBLITZ.

Asahi Kasei Europe participates in European multi-partner project on CCUS technology

Dusseldorf, 14 November 2017 – Asahi Kasei Europe is participating in the three-year multi-partner ALIGN-CCUS project to help transform six European industrial regions into economically robust, low-carbon centres by 2025. Asahi Kasei“s electrolyzer technology will be one of the cornerstones for CO2 reuse and therefore the reduction of CO2 emissions.

On November 7th, the ALIGN-CCUS Project Consortium announced the launch of the ALIGN-CCUS (carbon capture, utilisation and storage) Project, a partnership project which runs from 2017 to 2020 and consists of 31 research institutes and industrial companies from five European countries. The project received EUR15 million funding from the European ERA-NET ACT (Accelerating CCS Technologies) fund and aims at transforming six European industrial regions into low-carbon centres. ACT is a European Union initiative to accelerate the deployment of safe and cost-effective carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. ACT receives funding support from the European Commission“s Horizon 2020 instrument, the ERA NET Cofund.

Europe in general and especially Germany with its ambitious goals for CO2 reduction, its drop-out of nuclear energy by 2022 and its high share of electric power supply by renewable energy sources have a high need for reliable CCUS- and power storage technologies. Hydrogen has been in the centre of interest in the recent years, not only in the field of energy storage (Power-to-Gas) but also as an important component to produce fuel for automobiles (Power-to-Fuel).

Cooperation with industrial and academic leaders in the CCUS field

Asahi Kasei with its leading technology for ion exchange membranes and chlor-alkali electrolysis has been chosen as partner for the ALIGN-CCUS Project and provides its alkaline water electrolysis system for the production of green hydrogen. Hydrogen produced with Asahi Kasei“s alkaline water electrolysis system and CO2 captured at power plants will be transformed into fuels such as green methanol and green dimethyl ether (DME). This system can be scaled-up and has high energy exchange efficiency. With this technology Asahi Kasei contributes to a decrease in CO2 footprints in the fields of transportation and power generation.

Together with European partner institutions and companies, Asahi Kasei Europe as the operational headquarter of Asahi Kasei in Europe will be a member of Work Package 4 of the ALIGN-CCUS Project. Work Package 4 will focus on designing, constructing and operating a first-of-a-kind, full-chain CO2 capture and conversion project in an industrial environment. The applicability and environmental performance of CCU products, methanol and DME, will also be assessed along with potential market demand. Together with prominent partners such as RWE, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe, FEV, Bosch, DEUTZ, RWTH Aachen University, TNO and ECN, Asahi Kasei Europe will conduct a demonstration experiment in Germany.

„The ALIGN-CCUS project contributes to reducing CO2 emissions in the fields of transportation and power generation. We are very happy to participate in this project by using our alkaline water electrolysis system to produce green hydrogen. Augsburg, November 07, 2017 – meteocontrol GmbH has won a strong partner in the shape of Kon-Tek Otomasyon AS, one of Turkey’s leading O&M service providers: Kon-Tek wants to control and monitor its entire portfolio of existing PV systems and all new systems using the meteocontrol monitoring system. meteocontrol has already equipped four new solar parks and the first existing systems with its monitoring components. All the systems will be monitored via the central platform VCOM (virtual control room).

The Turkish PV market has reached its peak value to date in 2017 with newly installed capacity of around 1 GWp. Ever greater solar portfolios require professional monitoring. O&M service providers such as the Kon-Tek Energy Department face the challenge of consistently and efficiently implementing monitoring for their constantly growing system portfolio. This calls for an independent monitoring system that is flexible in terms of the integrated components and brings together both existing and new systems in one platform.

Well positioned with monitoring from meteocontrol
Kon-Tek wants to be ideally equipped for the future with a uniform monitoring system. The PV service provider is focusing on growth: By the end of 2017, the portfolio should cover around 100 MWp installed capacity, with the target of doubling that amount in 2018. To monitor all the systems efficiently and securely, Kon-Tek is retrofitting the entire portfolio of existing systems to the monitoring solution from meteocontrol and also installing the hardware and software of the market leader for independent monitoring systems into new systems. meteocontrol has equipped four solar parks, each with a capacity of between 4 and 5 MWp, with data loggers from the blue’Log X series, set up the systems in the VCOM monitoring portal, and put them into operation. „We have experience in the Turkish market and offer special packages for unlicensed and licensed projects, in other words, systems greater than 1 MWp,“ explains Martin Schneider, Managing Director of meteocontrol. „The flexibility of our data loggers and the VCOM software with its analysis options are hugely important specifically for operation management providers like Kon-Tek. We also offer our customers the necessary engineering to ensure smooth implementation. This includes planning, design and commissioning of the entire monitoring system.“

Simple upgrading of existing systems
meteocontrol has upgraded the first existing Kon-Tek systems with a capacity of 12 MWp to the uniform monitoring system. Where necessary, new hardware is also installed, but, for the most part, the upgrade is carried out simply and quickly by importing the system data. „The professional monitoring system offers security, since the contingency risk is noticeably reduced as a result, and yields rise. That convinces investors, especially those who already know the system and appreciate the added value,“ says Martin Schneider.

Augsburg/Santiago de Chile, October 11, 2017 – meteocontrol GmbH, the worldwide leading provider of independent photovoltaic (PV) monitoring systems, continues to pursue an international market presence. With the founding of a joint venture in Chile, the company is meeting the needs of the growing photovoltaic markets in South America. meteocontrol Chile SpA has its headquarters in Santiago de Chile, and is focusing on tapping the markets in Chile, Peru and Bolivia.

The signs point to growth – both at meteocontrol and for the use of solar energy in Chile. „We want to push our internationalization. Monitoring for Public Solar Rooftop Program in Chile
Within the framework of the Public Solar Rooftop Program „Programa de Techos Solares Publicos“ meteocontrol has, to date, installed monitoring systems on 106 photovoltaic systems on public buildings in northern and central Chile in cooperation with Ingetrace SpA, a Chilean PV service provider. This successful collaboration inspired the establishment of meteocontrol Chile SpA under the direction of Fernando de la Rosa: „Our whole team is looking forward to the new challenge and we are contributing the necessary experience from our many years in the sale of technologically demanding products. Photovoltaic has become the most economical form of energy production in Chile and thus offers huge growth potential. The goal is to take complete advantage of this opportunity.“

Digitalization as a challenge and a chance

Smart meter technologies provide energy utilities with new means for optimized consumption transparency and a deepened customer dialogue

Cologne, 04.10.2017 – Digitalization has an impact on all aspects of life. The analogous measurement technologies are gradually abolished and replaced by smart meter-technologies. This changeover is a major challenge for all energy utilities, but it also offers new opportunities. Smart meter specialist GreenPocket provides utilities with innovative means to give their customers a transparent view on their energy consumption and to improve their customer dialogue.

The digitalization of the energy industry and the interrelated smart meter-rollout are occasionally viewed as a legally enforced burden by energy utilities. It is less well-known that the changeover to smart energy also provides high potential for improvement: Analogous measurement technologies are solely able to measure the energy consumption of a residential or a business-customer on an annual basis, whereas smart meters generate one data point every 15 minutes. This leads to over 35.000 data points in a year, resulting in a far more precise customer knowledge.

Smart meter-specialist GreenPocket is a reliable partner for energy utility companies, aiming to support their sales activities with optimized data transparency and energy efficiency. This enables an easy differentiation between an economic basic package on the one hand and a more extensive premium package with optional features like alarm and notification functionalities on the other hand. These packages can then be bundled into different pricing models by the energy utilities.
Another improvement of the web portal for business customers comprises an enhanced data quality control. With the help of bar and line charts, energy providers can now easily detect if and when gaps arise in their automatic data import. This allows an optimized monitoring of data quality.

Campaigning tool and gamification for the residential customer portal
The web portal for residential customers has also been substantially updated with two valuable functions for energy utility companies. The campaigning tool now enables a precise modulation of marketing instruments based on individual customer behaviour, such as promotions via push notifications and email-alerts (e.g. giving hints on „happy hours“ when energy prices are low). It is now possible to individually select and address customer profiles with certain consumption patterns and offer fitting tariffs and bundles to each customer.
In addition to this, the new gamification app encourages consumers to lay daily bets on the height of their energy consumption, increasing the software’s usage frequency and customer involvement: In a test run of 3 months, about half of the customers made use of the gamification app, 25% of them even played on a daily basis. This way, energy utilities can significantly increase customer awareness and retention.

Owing to the rapid increase in global shipping traffic during recent years, there is growing need for constant innovation in the field of maritime surveillance.

Shipping companies deploy modern technologies to ensure enhanced monitoring, efficiency and security of their fleet. Vessel location and navigation systems have become a primary focus.

Earth Observation contributes to maritime surveillance to help manage the actions and events that can have an impact on maritime safety and security, including for marine pollution, accident and disaster response, search and rescue as well as maritime border and fisheries control.

Space-Based Automated Route Planning

„As far as voyage planning is concerned, we are already working on optimizing the automated route calculation based on the influence of integrated Earth observation data“, says Friedhelm Moggert-Kägeler, Head of Product Management at SevenCs GmbH.

SevenCs develops S-57 chart display Kernels for ECDIS, WECDIS and other maritime applications, ENC production and distribution software, and professional maritime navigation software. SevenCs is also project partner of MARSAT, a corporate network of private companies and a research institute that develops new services for the maritime industry using satellite data.

MARSAT project partners include EOMAP GmbH & Co. KG, Drift & Noise Polar Services GmbH, European Space Imaging GmbH, SevenCs GmbH, Trenz AG and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL). The network that started work in August 2016 creates and integrates operational services to allow the maritime industry to take advantage of the most up-to date satellite information in their daily work.

„For SevenCs, the first MARSAT year offered the opportunity to embark upon completely new activities, e.g. Satellite Derived Bathymetry, as well as working on new innovative solutions for traditional subjects of maritime navigation such as voyage planning. A first MARSAT workshop on 21 September 2017 in Hamburg, Germany provides a platform to discuss these challenges and solutions for the maritime industry in the digital era (Maritime 4.0) with a strong focus on remote sensing, model results and the integration of data into daily practice.

The DP World’s Solar Power Programme represents the largest solar rooftop-system project in the Middle East to date. During the first phase of the project 88,000 photovoltaic modules are being installed and will produce energy that equals the power supply to 3,000 households. The total installed output power amounts to 25.8 MWp. With its solar program, DP World is making a significant contribution to the planned expansion of clean-energy production in Dubai, operating under the „Shams Dubai“ initiative.

Custom-fit monitoring system, support and training
DP World’s first solar systems are already connected to the grid and meteocontrol is providing the monitoring. „The entire system portfolio is equipped with data loggers from the blue’Log X series and the VCOM (virtual control room). Augsburg/Leini, 07/13/2017 – The monitoring systems made by meteocontrol GmbH have just achieved their next success: The Italian company TGE S.r.l. is now using the VCOM monitoring portal to control its 102 photovoltaic systems. The O&M provider also plans to integrate other existing systems into the latest portal solution and to equip new systems with meteocontrol hardware and software for its customers.

TGE currently manages 102 photovoltaic systems with an installed output of about 17,000 kWp under an O&M agreement. To create the most efficient monitoring system possible, the technical operational manager decided to combine all of the solar systems in the VCOM monitoring portal. „Thanks to our long working relationship with meteocontrol, our choice was obvious: We would switch from the previous system to the latest portal solution offered by meteocontrol,“ said Davide Forastiere, the Technical Director of TGE. Regardless of their size, components or monitoring systems, solar systems can be integrated with VCOM“s help. Because of this, TGE is planning to add 15 other existing systems to the platform. „The uniform monitoring solution enables us to monitor the entire system portfolio at once and integrate existing or new systems into the portal,“ Davide Forastiere said. „The operation management is now much more efficient, and we get the maximum energy yield for our customers.“

VCOM conducts comprehensive analyses and provides overviews that facilitate direct comparison of solar systems in a portfolio. „With the help of a sophisticated alarm system, operation management can react to malfunctions very quickly as well as uncover problems that could result in permanent yield losses,“ said Martin Schneider, the Managing Director of meteocontrol, in outlining the strengths of the remote monitoring system. „Our goal is to provide our customers with a portal that is always state of the art. Augsburg/Parma, 07/11/2017 – Stern Energy S.p.a has reached a decision: The Italian O&M operator of photovoltaic systems will further rely on the monitoring platform of Germany-based meteocontrol GmbH to run operations on its portfolio. 25 MWp of the overall 195 MWp installed power that Stern Energy monitors and operates in Italy are already integrated in VCOM (virtual control room) and therefore can be monitored and controlled by means of the central platform. Stern Energy receives direct, on-site support in the Italian language by meteocontrol Italia S.r.l.

„We want to provide our customers with optimal systems performance and maximum returns, while working effectively and cost-efficiently,“ explains Stefan Torri, CEO of Stern Energy. „That is why we decided to place all the solar parks onto one monitoring platform. The first 25 MWp have already been integrated in the VCOM central monitoring portal and another almost 30 MWp are currently in the project pipeline.“

With the modular structure of its monitoring solution, meteocontrol offers the best conditions for the implementation thereof. The scalability of the system allows the hardware and software to be adjusted to meet complex park layouts, constantly growing technical requirements and currently applicable standards. „We can also integrate existing systems in the VCOM with a wide range of software solutions and hardware components,“ explains Martin Schneider, the Managing Director of meteocontrol. „If it“s necessary to retrofit with hardware, as is partially the case with Stern Energy, the costs are relatively low in comparison to complex operation management with different systems and portal environments.“ In addition, bundling all systems onto one monitoring platform creates transparency and comparability, thus enabling the early detection of any hidden errors as well as a prompt response in the event of a disruption.

Augsburg, July 06, 2017 – meteocontrol GmbH has become a partner of Arkolia Energies in Montpellier, France. The aim of the partnership is to equip all of the solar parks operated by the solar-energy company with a uniform monitoring system and to facilitate electricity feed-in. meteocontrol will integrate the existing PV systems into the manufacture-independent monitoring platform VCOM. For its new systems, Arkolia Energies plans to use the complete monitoring solution offered by meteocontrol, including hardware components. meteocontrol also developed the necessary interface with Enedis, a French grid operator, for this purpose.

Arkolia Energies has a solar portfolio of about 150 MWp of installed power. More than 400 MWp is currently in the development phase as well. To ensure that the solar systems can be efficiently and securely monitored, the company decided to work with meteocontrol. The flexibility of the monitoring system is what sold Arkolia Energies on meteocontrol: The existing systems equipped with a broad range of different monitoring systems can be imported into the VCOM monitoring portal without any hardware changes. Arkolia Energies can now monitor and manage all systems in VCOM.

„We entered a partnership with meteocontrol for one main reason: Its monitoring solution is a system with open interfaces that can be modified to meet our needs,“ said Guillaume Bringard, the O&M Manager at Arkolia Energies. In 2015, the French grid operator Enedis imposed requirements regarding the management of feed-in active power (P0) and reactive power (Q0) on energy producers. meteocontrol developed the interface that enables Arkolia Energies to meet these needs.

VCOM – all systems at a glance
meteocontrol has designed the central monitoring platform VCOM with flexibility in mind. As a result, the measurement data of components made by the widest range of manufacturers can be integrated and processed for analysis and visualization. „This is a cost-efficient solution for system operators, one that also generates real savings in operation management,“ said Martin Schneider, the Managing Director of meteocontrol. „The management of large system portfolios in particular becomes much more effective, error analysis easier and response time to system failures faster.“ meteocontrol also adapts software applications to the individual system and is developing additional remote-monitoring features for Arkolia Energies.
