Amsterdam, 26 April 2017 – AOC widens the range of its displays with two new special models. Collaborated with the world-famous design house Studio F. A. Porsche, the 24 inch AOC PDS241 and 27 inch AOC PDS271 redefine what one can expect from a monitor. Equipped with a 3-sides frameless AH-IPS panel, an asymmetrical metal stand and an ultra-slim minimalistic premium design, both of these new members in the AOC portfolio are going to be eye-catchers even when turned off. With the first ever modular design on a monitor, the PDS241 and PDS271 combine power and HDMI outputs into one single cable coming from the stand itself, leaving only the display to be admired. Underneath their outstanding appearance, their AH-IPS panels enhanced with AOC SuperColor WCG technology cover broad-colour gamut and provide the widest possible viewing angles.

Innovative, sleek and elegant design

When two legends meet, extraordinary things can happen. The renowned display specialist AOC and the legendary design house Studio F. A. Porsche have collaborated to bring the best looking monitors to the market. The design philosophy behind this monitor is inspired by the philosophy of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. His approach was: „If you analyse the function of an object, its form often becomes obvious.“ In its purest sense, a monitor is just a screen. But in reality, this simplistic view is obscured by bulky stands and multiple cables hanging out from the backside. The new AOC PDS monitor series revolutionises the traditional approach to monitor design. „The expressive shape of the monitor stand emphasises the simple idea of integrating the cables into the stand. Both the 24″ PDS241 and the 27″ PDS271 will appeal to any style-conscious user such as business executives, designers and artists. At the front, the well-defined asymmetrical metal stand accentuates the 3-sides-frameless design. Looking from the sides, both these monitors are slimmer than the latest smartphones with a mere 5.2 mm thickness. The Studio F. A. Porsche designed monitors stand out from the crowd with their sleek appearance from the back – both the power and the monitor signal run through the stand and are divided in a separate box. The resulting clean look embodies what a monitor should be all about – the screen.

Wide colour gamut and wide viewing angles

When turned off, these monitors are real stunners, for sure, but they really shine when turned on. Thanks to their latest AH-IPS panels, both the 24″ PDS241 and the 27″ PDS271 provide 1920×1080 pixels at Full HD resolution with excellent wide viewing angles of 178°. AOC’s SuperColor WCG technology enables these monitors to cover 100% sRGB and 90% of the NTSC colour space.

Easy on the eye

For those who cannot take their eyes off these monitors, both are equipped with AOC’s Low Blue Light technology and Flicker-Free technology. AOC Low Blue Light reduces harmful short wavelength blue light. On the other hand, AOC’s Flicker-Free technology regulates the monitor’s brightness with a DC (Direct Current) backlight system instead of PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), thereby relieving eye discomfort and fatigue even during long periods of use. An HDMI connector lets users connect everything from desktop and mobile PC’s to game consoles and set-top boxes and an audio output enables a practical connection for headphones or speakers.

AOC’s PDS241 and PDS271 will be available in June 2017. The MSRP is 189 GBP for the PDS241 model and 259 GBP for the PDS271.

Smart KVM solutions for industrial applications

ControlCenter-Compact 80: High flexibility through remote access to all computers.

From 24 April to 28 April 2017, at Hannover Messe, Hall 11, booth D56, G&D will showcase a range of KVM solutions especially designed for industrial applications such as process control stations or control rooms. KVM products enable the spatial separation between computers and operators. This way, computers can be moved into a separate equipment room from where they can be operated from a distance – in real-time, latency-free and without image losses.

KVM extender systems consist of a computer module and a user module and extend computer signals. The latency-free data transmission between computers and control rooms or operators is carried out over a dedicated connection via CAT cable or optical fibre. KVM extenders extend computer signals up to 140 m over CAT cables or up to 10,000 m over optical fibres. When transmitting via optical fibres, there is a galvanic isolation between the transmitter and the receiver module, which makes the devices insensitive to interference radiation. Due to their robust design, time and again, the systems have proven their worth in harsh industrial environments.

DP1.2-VisionXG – latency-free data transmission of high-resolution video up to 8K
A highlight on the G&D stand will be the presentation of the DP1.2-VisionXG, a powerful system that extends signals via fibre optics. It uses uncompressed data transmission and supports extremely high video resolutions up to 4K and 8K with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The system includes many user-friendly and mission-critical features such as the screen-freeze function, the monitoring function, a redundant power supply, SNMP and two network ports. The screen-freeze function is a safety feature, which, in case of an issue, „freezes“ the image last displayed on the monitor. This state is highlighted by a red semi-transparent frame. Meanwhile, the current time and the downtime of the video signal is displayed.

The continuous monitoring of the G&D device status ensures a long life cycle for the equipment. If defined states (for example ON / OFF) are changed or defined threshold values (for example, temperature) are exceeded, a corresponding documentation is generated in the web interface and the administrator can be notified via SNMP.

ControlCenter-Compact – high performance in compact form.
Industrial control rooms and process monitoring are characterized by a distributed and heterogeneous computer landscape. Often, several sources must be monitored at the same time. The use of a KVM matrix, e.g. the ControlCenter-Compact, improves the IT infrastructure and harmonizes spatially distributed installations, which can bridge distances up to 10,000m thanks to different transmission media (CAT or fibre). KVM matrix systems switch and distribute computer signals and are used whenever several computers have to be operated remotely via different, simultaneous workstations. The ControlCenter-Compact is available in six expansion levels providing between 8 and 80 dynamic ports and is compatible with both the DVICenter and the ControlCenter-Digital as well as all end devices, which makes it possible to add new systems to existing infrastructures. Special end components make it possible to operate multi-monitor workstations adding to the usability, as control room staff have to monitor several processes and programs running on different computers.

Versatile functions for flexible and user-friendly operation
On the G&D stand at Hannover Messe, one of the highlights will be the ControlCenter-Compact with both its wide range of functions and its simple and intuitive operation. It features a range of mission-critical and user-friendly features, such as CrossDisplay-Switching, the push-get function and scenario switching to make the work of the control room staff as efficient as possible. The integrated CrossDisplay-Switching is extremely useful for multi-monitor workstations. Here, users are able to swicth between channels simply by moving the mouse. The mouse acts as if on a „virtual desktop“ and can be moved seamlessly across the connected displays. When moving the cursor from the active to an inactive display, the keyboard-mouse focus automatically switches to the connected computer. This way, for users it feels like working on a virtual desktop.

The push-get function, which is available for all digital matrix switches, is also ideal for the cooperation of several operators in industrial control rooms. With the Push-Get function, users can move the screen contents of a target to (push) – or get it from – the display of another console. This display can be a large screen projection, for example. By using this function, operators can work together on solving issues..

Switching between day and night shift often also requires the operation and monitoring of different computer constellations. Scenario switching makes it possible to store predefined setups of switching conditions (e.g. day/night scenario). The selected switching states are saved in a script in the matrix system and can be accessed and executed via the OSD of workplaces assigned with the required rights.

The difference lies in the detail
In addition to simple, intuitive operation, G&D places particular emphasis on add-on products especially tailored to the industry. For example, the HK-Controller lets you use individual buttons or pushbuttons to transmit commands or shortcuts. Industrial-suited mounting sets for rack, table and rail mounting simplify the installation.

The continuous improvement of mambo+, the simple and user-optimized business intelligence tool for domain portfolios, goes on. The enhanced abuse monitoring offers compliance with Spec 11 3b of the ICANN registry agreement. Further to that, mambo+ now provides additional business intelligence functionality for registries, registrars and registrants.

By analysing technical information and usage data of domain names the users gain important insights for operative and strategic decisions. Thereby, mambo+ helps to improve services, to determine the demand and market potentials of new functions, and last not least to enhance reputation and customer support. Besides these improvements a lot of further innovations have been added to mambo+. The user interface has been redesigned to become even more comfortable, and a new app (for iOS and Android) has been developed which provides instant user notifications on mobile devices about new or omitted abuse cases.

Another technical innovation is the new smart mambo+ bulb. These LED Bluetooth bulbs signal status updates of domain abuse cases within a domain portfolio, hereby supplementing the automated reports and e-mail alerts that mambo+ provides out of the box. This allows to respond to domain abuse cases even quicker.

The first public presentation of the smart mambo+ bulbs has taken place at the ICANN meeting in Copenhagen from March 11th to March 16th. There, interested registries had the possibility to get sample devices for free.

Next release will include Bulgarian, Italian, Punjabi, Hindi. Also the database structure has been expanded and migrated to accommodate more features for handling ransomware cases where users of technicians try to clean computers and recover encrypted data.

The annual NAB Show in Las Vegas is a thriving meeting place for all US broadcasters and digital media professionals. Uncompressed transmission of 4K and 8K over distances up to 10,000 m
The DisplayPort KVM extender system DP1.2-VisionXG consists of a computer module (transmitter) and a user module (receiver) and extends computer signals via fiber optics over distances up to 10,0000m. For the perfect hand eye coordination, the transmission of high-resolution DisplayPort video signals is uncompressed, pixel perfect and lossless. The dedicated transmission via optical fibers offers sufficient bandwidth for an uncompressed and pixel-perfect transmission of 4K and 8K videos at 60Hz as well as for keyboard/mouse, RS232, USB2.0, and audio signals. This compression mode allows the loss-less transmission of video signals with a resolution of 4K at 60Hz. The KVM extender DP-Vision1.2 already uses the advantages of this new compression mode for the extension of computer signals either via fiber optics up to 10,000 m or via CAT cables up to 140 m.

Switching 4K video signals via matrix systems
It is even more exciting when it comes to extending computer signals not only as a point-to-point connection, but when these signals are also switched and distributed – or in other words, when several computers are to be operated remotely via different, simultaneous workstations. Following G&D“s principle of mix & match, all products as well as their variants are compatible and can be combined with each other. The KVM extender DP1.2-Vision can easily be integrated into G&D matrix systems such as the ControlCenter-Compact or the ControlCenter-Digital, which allows the extension and switching of 4K at 60 Hz through the matrix.

Unlimited access with KVM-over-IP™
Based on IP structures, the new KVM extender DP-Vision-IP complements G&D“s portfolio and breaks any limitations of bridging distances that existed so far. The system supports DisplayPort video resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz or 3840 x 2160 @ 30 Hz. Combinations with other G&D systems are also possible thus allowing complex installations with worldwide access.

Following G&D“s principle of mix & match, all products as well as their variants are compatible and can be combined with each other. The KVM extender DP1.2-Vision can easily be integrated into G&D matrix systems such as the ControlCenter-Compact or the ControlCenter-Digital, which allows the extension and switching of 4K at 60 Hz through the matrix. The ControlCenter-Compact is available in six expansion levels providing between 8 and 80 dynamic ports, which can be used either as input or as output. The device is compatible with both the DVICenter and the ControlCenter-Digital as well as all end devices, which makes it possible to add new systems to existing infrastructures.

G&D“s matrix switches include many useful and helpful functionalities such as CrossDisplay-Switching and scenario switching. The KVM Matrix-Grid™ further enhances the possibilities of interconnecting distributed IT structures. At different locations different matrix systems can be integrated into a system, resulting in a large, virtual, reliable matrix system, which can be expanded flexibly. Another useful feature – the monitoring function – allows administrators to monitor and maintain both computer modules and user modules as well as the central matrix.

Based on IP structures, the new KVM extender DP-Vision-IP complements G&D“s portfolio and breaks any spatial limitations that existed so far. The system supports DisplayPort video resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz or 3840 x 2160 @ 30 Hz. Combinations with other G&D systems are also possible thus allowing complex installations with worldwide access. Is nearly faultless video good enough for ATC?

Few workplaces have higher standards or more stringent regulations than the ATC control room. With human life at stake, it“s no place to cut corners or make any kind of error. For the ATCOs who work there, it is a highly strenuous job requiring the highest levels of concentration with multi-tasking skills. Therefore perfect working conditions are an absolute necessity. To work effectively, ATCOs need accurate information – e.g. if trajectories on a radar screen are crossing on different levels, displayed in different colours to indicate different parameters, this visual information needs to be crystal clear and absolutely reliable.

The work in the control room involves constantly staring at a computer screen which can be detrimental to health. First of all the heat and noise generated by the computers themselves can be stressful and a distraction. KVM systems can solve this issue by moving computers out of the control room whilst ensuring remote operation in real-time. Another health aspect is the Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) with its symptoms of headaches, blurred vision, neck pain and eye strain underlines the need for providing the highest levels of video quality. So if using a KVM system this maximum level of video quality has to be ensured.

An uncompressed ideal

KVM systems allow computers to be moved out of the ATC control room and into a dedicated technical centre whilst ensuring remote operation in real-time. With computers out of the control room, noise and heat follow along with the computer maintenance engineers. There“s more safety too as KVM is custom-made for redundancy concepts.

There is a choice of systems available and the major difference lies in the video transmission. Some systems transmit the available information pixel-by-pixel and in real-time – this is called an uncompressed transmission. In use, these KVM systems operate between the computer and the workplace and act „transparently“- what comes in is what goes out. This is because uncompressed systems provide the high bandwidth necessary to forward the entire incoming video from the computer“s graphics adaptor to the display. The transmission is pixel-by-pixel perfect, transparent, uncompressed and absolutely lossless. However, the higher the video resolution, the more bandwidth is required so more demand is placed on the transmission system, making it more costly. Therefore the result is absolutely reliable and at the maximum quality. The ATCO does get to see every any single pixel that the computer system can provide.

The legal component

The highest video quality is also an essential for the majority of ANSPs that record ATC communications. If an issue should occur, this recorded material is used as a clarification of events. But for a true „recording at the glass“ the recorded quality has to correspond exactly with what the ATCO has seen, so it does not become questionable as evidence. When recording takes place remotely in the technical area but the video displayed at the CWP is transmitted via a KVM system – only uncompressed systems guarantee the reliability for referential integrity.

Is compression a viable choice?

Depending on the application and on the quality achieved, video compression has many advantages. First among these is lower bandwidth which in turn allows for lower spec (and cheaper) components and easier ways of further handling the signals, especially via matrix systems. Matrix systems allow complex switching of the signals. Many computers and consoles are connected to a central matrix switch which allows cross-wise access. This can be seen as kind of a bottleneck as the switch has to handle all the video and further signal streams at a time. But with the lower bandwidth of compressed video, such bottlenecks can be solved – whilst taking into account a slightly reduced video quality.

At G&D, along with our uncompressed KVM solutions we“ve also developed systems using our own compression algorithm. Working with G&D High Dynamic Image Processing Level 3, these also provide a pixel perfect video result and are suitable for ATC use, too. However, compressed or uncompressed, all of our systems are thoroughly tested and produced according to ISO 9001 standard, which is supported by decades of experience providing installations for the ATC sector. Yet for compressed systems we have to admit: what commonly is called visually lossless – the term itself already implies it – contains certain losses though.

Is it worth it?

The primary reason for choosing a compressed system over an uncompressed one is cost. The question is, should cost be a factor in the critical environment of the ATC control room? When human life is at risk not to mention the health and careers of those who work in such an environment, the slightest cut in quality, efficiency or standards becomes very difficult to justify. There is a difference between compressed and uncompressed video. The risk may be minimal with compressed and for sure the financial costs are less but it only takes one mistake for a severe incident to occur. The cost of that could be incalculable in financial and human terms too. So if you really have no alternative and an uncompressed system is beyond your budget, make sure you go for the very best compressed system available!

Guntermann & Drunck GmbH can claim another superlative in the KVM industry: the DP1.2-VisionXG-MC4, the world’s first and only KVM extender for uncompressed, latency-free transmission of 8K video at 60Hz. The high-class KVM extender system consists of a computer module and a user module. It allows users to operate their computers remotely while benefitting from the pixel-perfect, uncompressed transmission of high-resolution DisplayPort video over four video channels and distances of up to 10,000m. Thanks to the source synchronicity of the video channels, even the highest video resolutions can be extended over long distances. This fact is especially interesting since DisplayPort cables for transmitting high resolutions are usually extremely short.

The dedicated transmission over optical fibres provides enough bandwidth for uncompressed DisplayPort 1.2 video signals, keyboard/mouse, RS232, USB2.0 and audio.

With HungaroControl“s remote tower concept, Budapest Airport, which counts around 100,000 flight movements per year, is the first remote-controlled airport of its size. For ATCOs working in the tower, it is extremely important to have a direct view at arrivals, departures and the ground traffic. Managing movements without being able to directly monitoring the ground from the tower is a revolutionary approach and therefore a great challenge for the cooperation and communication of all parties involved. HungaroControl has tackled these challenges by applying G&D KVM products in one of Europe“s most modern remote control centres.

Whether arrival, departure or managing ground traffic – G&D“s KVM equipment offers reliable and invisible support for ATCOs. With KVM, computers can be moved out of the control centre while ATCOs are still able to fully access them remotely. The redundancy concept based on the KVM matrix switch ControlCenter-Digital offers maximum security and provides prevention against failures.

Hungary’s first remote tower concept is based on the bi-directional integration of the existing ground monitoring system and a camera network that is set up at several locations at the airport in order to improve the situation awareness of air traffic controllers and increase flight safety. All camera images are forwarded to four video wall servers and finally displayed on a huge video wall with 32 screens (10 x 3 m).
This video wall does not only provide ATCOs with comprehensive visual information, but offers a complete overview of the entire airport, too. The KVM technology in the background facilitates the work of air traffic controllers without being noticed and therefore serves as a reliable 24/7 wingman.
