The winning instruments will all be showcased in the gala concert that will take place on 14th June 2014. Violin making „Mecca“
Even Mozart played a violin made in Mittenwald. Throughout the two week competition Mittenwald is set to become a violin making „Mecca“ with the town hosting a range of concerts, special tours, music markets, work-shop open days, lectures and church services. The Mittenwald based violin makers workshops, the little Mittenwald violin making museum and the renowned instrument making school are all great ambassadors for this fascinating and very artistic craft. This is also reflected in the famous „Lüftlmalerei“ frescos on the walls of the houses and in the selection of music performed at the Mittenwald Summer Music festival.

Mittenwald is located about 100 km south of Munich close to the border of the Tirol. Together with its neighbouring towns Wallgau and Krün, Mittenwald is part of the region „Alpenwelt Karwendel“. This part of Bavaria counts as an Eldorado for bikers, families and hikers. Music is varied in the Alpenwelt Karwendel like nowhere else in Bavaria. The repertoire reaches from real music for brass instruments past church concerts right down to concerts of world stars on Schloss Elmau.

In 1684 the violin maker Matthias Klotz brought the craftsmanship from Italy back to his hometown of Mittenwald in Bavaria. It was the beginning of a tradition that still lasts centuries later. 200 years later the violin making school was founded. Scholars from all over the world still come to upper Bavaria today to learn the craft of violin making. About ten masters of violin making are still working in Mittenwald today and their violins are sought after in the world of musicians.

Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau are also renowned for their historical al fresco paintings. The grand „story books“ on the houses are typical for the land of Werdenfels and for upper Bavaria.
